We are all Pilgrims on this earth. All of us walk through this life trying to understand what it's about and searching for something that is unchangeable. Sometimes we break free from the things that bind us, and wander uninhibited across our planet, journeying inwardly within our souls, and outwardly in our bodies searching for the Eternity which we have known in our hearts. We all realize intuitively that this body in which we live is but a tent, soon to wear out and be discarded. The possessions that we cling to also fail to satisfy.
God, who made the world and all things in it, since he is Lord of Heaven and Earth, does not live in temples made with human hands. We are more likely to find him in the eternal beauty of a starry night. He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on the face of the earth, and this is why we find Pilgrims on every continent and in every religion. The life and breath that he has given us to search for him causes men and women to set out as Pilgrims to seek for him, even though he is not far from each one of us! Every true Pilgrim discovers this, the closeness of the unknown God. My pilgrimage led me to Jesus, but before I knew his name I was aware of his closeness.
Is not God in the height of Heaven? Look also at the distant stars, how high they are! And you say "What does God Know? Can he judge through the thick darkness?" You say "Clouds are a hiding place for him so that he cannot see!" (Job)
The Creator who circumscribed the vault of heaven is not so blind! He can see all our innermost thoughts and plans. A Pilgrim is one that learns to walk in the presence of the all seeing one, and learns to know His thoughts as he knows our thoughts. The Pilgrim is not looking for the spirit of this World but the Spirit who is from God so that he may know the eternal things freely given to us by God. The greatest pilgrim of all was Jesus. He went to Jerusalem as a pilgrim to visit the most glorious temple ever built by man, a Temple which contained the Holy of Holies, the dwelling place of the Creator. However when he was shown the Temple he said:
"Destroy this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up"
Jesus was speaking of the temple of his body. He redirected his hearers from their awe of earthly glory to the awe of his own heavenly majesty. No man has seen God at any time, but the only begotten God, Jesus Christ, who is in the bosom of the Father has explained him. Once we have understood who Jesus is, God's message, our whole life becomes a pilgrimage of discovering the one who has never been far from us!
